IMPULSE INTELLIGENCE™The Flickerling-Based Emotional-Reaction Training Program

Impulse Intelligence™ is an educational training program developed by Bee & Peacock that teaches children to recognize and understand the reactions that can arise between an emotion and an action.

The program is built around a simple sequence:

EVENT → EMOTION → RECOGNIZE → NAME THE IMPULSE → PAUSE → CHOICE

Important: THE FLICKERLING DIFFERENCE

Children experience emotions every day. But what happens after the emotion can be just as important.

A child may feel angry, frustrated, embarrassed, excited, frightened, or disappointed. Then a reaction can rise up—a sudden push that says, “Do this.”

Impulse Intelligence™ gives that reaction a personality.

Those reactions are represented by Flickerlings: tiny, chaotic, insistent creatures that represent the impulses that can arise after an emotion.

Flickerlings do not represent emotions.

They represent reactions to emotions—the part that can push behavior.

THE PROGRAM BEGINS WITH THE BOOK: "Rusty Ruins the Fort and Other Important Things"    read aloud

Children first meet the Flickerlings through story.

The book creates the experience before the program introduces the framework.

After reading the story, educators guide children to look more closely at what happened:

What did the character feel?

What happened after the feeling?

What reaction showed up?

What did the reaction want the character to do?

What might happen if the character followed it?

What else could the character choose?

The story introduces the experience.

Impulse Intelligence™ gives children a language for recognizing that same experience in themselves.

FROM STORY TO IMPULSE INTELLIGENCE™

The program moves children through a progression:

READ → EXPERIENCE → DISCUSS → RECOGNIZE → NAME → PAUSE → CHOOSE

Children learn that having an impulse does not mean they have to act on it.

They learn to notice the reaction, give it a name, understand what it is urging them to do, pause, and consider what happens next.

WHAT CHILDREN LEARN

Through story-based lessons and activities, children learn to:

Recognize when a reaction begins to wake up

Distinguish an emotional reaction from the emotion itself

Name and describe recurring reactions

Identify what a reaction is urging them to do

Map how one reaction can lead to another

Practice creating a pause before acting

Consider the consequences of following a reaction

Identify alternative choices

THE FLICKERLING FIELD GUIDE

Children can create and document their own Flickerlings using the Flickerling Field Guide.

They can give a Flickerling:

A name

An appearance

A personality

A trigger

A purpose

Something it wants them to do

A possible consequence

An alternative choice

This turns an invisible internal experience into something children can see, describe, discuss, and examine.

WHO THE PROGRAM SERVES

Impulse Intelligence™ is designed for children and teens and can be used by:

Schools and educators

A SIX-SESSION INTRODUCTORY PROGRAM

The initial Impulse Intelligence™ program introduces children to the Flickerlings through six progressive sessions:

SESSION 1 — MEET THE FLICKERLINGS

Children discover that reactions can feel like something inside them is pushing them to act.

SESSION 2 — CATCH THE FLICKER

Children learn to recognize the moment a reaction begins to wake up.

SESSION 3 — NAME IT

Children learn to identify and name their recurring reactions.

SESSION 4 — FOLLOW THE CHAIN

Children explore how one reaction can trigger another and how reactions can build.

SESSION 5 — PAUSE

Children practice creating space between an impulse and an action.

SESSION 6 — CHOOSE

Children practice deciding whether to follow the reaction or make another choice.

THE ROLE OF EDUCATORS

Educators do not need to lecture children about impulse control.

Their role is to facilitate recognition.

They read the story, guide discussion, introduce the Flickerling concept, and provide opportunities for children to practice.

Questions may include:

What happened?

What did you feel?

What reaction showed up?

What would your Flickerling want you to do?

What might happen if you follow it?

What else could you choose?

THE ROLE OF PARENTS

Parents can reinforce the language outside the classroom.

Instead of asking only:

“What were you feeling?”

Parents can also ask:

“What reaction came next?”

“Was a Flickerling trying to get you to do something?”

“What was it telling you to do?”

“Did you choose to follow it?”

“What else could you choose?”

THE IMPULSE INTELLIGENCE™ PROGRAM

Impulse Intelligence™ brings together story, character, discussion, creative activities, and behavioral practice to give children a concrete way to think about the moment between feeling and acting.

The Flickerlings make the invisible reaction visible.

They give children a language for recognizing what can happen inside them before behavior occurs.

Impulse Intelligence™ does not ask children to eliminate their emotions or pretend that impulses do not exist.

It teaches them to notice what is happening, name the reaction, pause, and make a choice.

BRING IMPULSE INTELLIGENCE™ TO YOUR STUDENTS
